Globalstar GSP 2900 Voice and Data Fixed Phone
QUALCOMM Globalstar GSP-2900 Fixed Satellite PhonesThe Globalstar
GSP-2900 Fixed Satellite Phone offer innovative wireless solutions for quick and
easy installation of communication systems in remote or hard-to-reach locations,
as well as in under-served urban and rural areas.
For the first time ever, a Globalstar Fixed Phone can bring a dial tone to
areas where traditional telephone services are not economically feasible. The
Radio Antenna Unit (RAU) and Junction Box are mounted at a convenient outdoor
location with a clear view of the sky and connect to a variety of available
indoor telephone sets using standard telephone cable, thus providing satellite
phone service from inside a building. Once installed, telephone sets connected
to the fixed satellite phone system can be operated just like landline telephone
sets.
Globalstar Residential Solutions The Globalstar Fixed Satellite
Phones enable remotely located residences to connect to the public telephone
network through the Globalstar Communication System, using standard residential
telephone equipment and wiring. Up to four standard telephone sets can be served
by one Radio Antenna Unit (RAU) using one phone number.
Globalstar Business Solutions Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phones
allow standard PBX, key systems, and single business phones to be connected to
the public telephone network using the Globalstar system.
GSP-2900
Fixed Satellite Phones Features:
- Standard twisted pair subscriber analog phone connection.
- Supports service of multiple extensions using standard telephone sets
including wall, desk, and cordless models, and answering machines.
- Supports standard dial tone, dial procedure, and call progress tones.
- Globalstar access for incoming and outgoing calls.
- Compatible with a variety of back-up power solutions, including solar power.

- GSP-2900 Kits.
The GSP-2900 Kits include:
- 15 meters (50 feet) of power/telco cabling to connect the RAU and junction
box.
- A 12-volt power supply with 7m (21 ft.) of DC output cable. Two AC line
cords are supplied, one with a European plug and one with a U.S. plug. Other
country-specific AC line cords are available, upon request.
- A backup battery for use with the QUALCOMM power supply. The backup battery
offers 3.5 hours of talk and 24 hours of standby time in the event the AC mains
fail.
- Radio Antenna Unit (RAU).
The RAU is the Globalstar radio
transceiver that enables communication over the Globalstar system. This
electronics module houses the Globalstar radio, digital call processing
circuitry and includes an integral mast antenna. It communicates with the
Globalstar satellites using a CDMA air interface and connects to an analog
telephone set using a twisted pair cable.

· Note: The RAU
must be mounted in a position where it has a clear, unobstructed view of the
sky.
· Junction Box The Junction Box is the
interface between the outside cables and the inside telephone wires. It provides
the user and equipment with some protection against nearby lightning strikes
when properly grounded. The junction box should be installed on the outside of
the building or structure at the point where the indoor cables transition to the
outside cabling.
Power Supply with Battery
Backup The Globalstar Power Supply with Battery Backup is a 12 VDC
power source capable of supplying a minimum of 3 amps of current. The DC
voltage, as measured at the RAU, should be in the range of 9.5 to 16 volts for
correct product operation. The power cords shipped with the power supply are
compatible with the AC wall outlets of most countries.
Battery
Backup
A 12 volt, 4.5 AH sealed, rechargeable lead-acid battery
provides backup for the power supply, in the event of AC mains failure. This
battery backup provides approximately 3.5 hours of talk time or 24 hours of
standby time. (These times may vary depending on how often you use the product,
battery condition, ambient temperature, and other factors.) The battery should
last 3 to 5 years under normal use.
Other Sources of
Power
Other sources of power, such as solar, work well with the
QUALCOMM Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phones, but are not sold by QUALCOMM.
Contact Spirit Wireless to recommend a solution suitable for your location. The
power supplied to the junction box and the RAU must be 12 volts, nominal. The DC
voltage, as measured at the RAU, must be in the range of 9.5 to 16
volts.
Cabling
A 50 foot (15m), four wire
telco/power cable is supplied with the GSP-2900 or may be purchased separately.
This cable connects the RAU and Junction Box.
If necessary,
you can manufacture the cable that connects the junction box and RAU. See
Appendix B of the GSP-2900 Installation Guide for specifications. Note that any
cable used for the QUALCOMM Globalstar Fixed Satellite Phones must meet these
specifications.
Telephone Set
A telephone set is
not included in the GSP-2900 QUALCOMM Globalstar Fixed Satellite
Phone.
The telephone set you choose should be configured for tone
dialing. A telephone set with a ringer equivalent number (REN) of less than five
is recommended. A telephone set with a lower REN value will permit the user to
place more telephone extensions on the line.

Making A Call
The Globalstar System Consists Of:
- A satellite constellation in a 1414 kilometer orbit (878 miles) above the
Earth.
- Multiple ground stations called "Gateways".
- The phones that communicate with the satellite (when in Globalstar mode).
The Globalstar system technology is designed to interface directly
with a nation's existing phone system. This gives the service provider and/or
the local government revenue from and control of its end of the satellite phone
system.
Overview of a Globalstar Phone Call 1. A caller uses
Globalstar mode to place a call via the satellite to one or more Gateways.
2. The Gateway routes the call to the existing phone network, in the case
indicated below, a cellular Public Land Mobile Network (PLMN) network. 3.
The PLMN routes the call to the intended receiver. The call is completed! 4.
The call duration, service used, and service area are reported to the Service
Provider for billing.
